An Astrologer's Day Short Story Video
Kindly Watch this video to go through the story.
How the movie is faithful to the original short story?
The movie adaptation is quite relevant to the story. But there are many differences we find between the original stories and the video. There are many scenes in the video that are not in the original story. If I talk about the character of the astrologer’s daughter. Then her character is missing in the original story while in the film her character is very significant. The camera movement speaks about her character very well. Though the plot is going the same as the story so we can say that
After watching the movie, have your perception about the short story, characters or situations changed?
It would be hard to say about changed perception. Because the story of the movie and the original are the same. Character and situations are also the same except for the scene of his daughter. My perception is changed towards the character of the astrologer’s wife. Because in the original story she is quite silent. But in the movie, she asked her husband about his business. She did some arguments about why he was not ready to go to his village.
Do you feel ‘aesthetic delight’ while watching the movie? If yes, exactly when did it happen? If not, can you explain with reasons?
It is very difficult to say either yes or no. but I would like to say yes. Because it happened when the mystery of the main character Gurunanak was solved. While watching I'm very much aware of the relationship between the astrologer and Gurunanak. At the beginning of the film, I didn’t aware of what kind of relationship between an Astrologer and Gurunanak. It also happened when the wife of an astrologer asked him to go back to their village and he denied it. And why they leave their village. That time also I feel like there is something behind this. But when astrologers were afraid of Gurunanak, something was linked in my mind. I thought there was some connection between them. And later on, we see what happened in the past. So that time I feel aesthetic delight.
I also feel aesthetic delight when the scene of the argument between astrologer and his wife.At that time his daughter is listening everything but she didn’t ask her parents. So the question may arise that, Is the character of his daughter significant or not?
Does screening of movie help you in better understand of the short story?
Obviously yes. Because it can be said that
Was there any particular scene or moment in the story that you think was perfect?
Yes, the scene of Gurunayak coming to an astrologer is quite perfect and appropriate. Because we see the whole essence of the story in the film adaptation. All the scenes from movies are interlinked with the original story.
If you are the director, what changes would you like to make in the remaking of the movie based on the short story “An Astrologer’s Day” by R.K.Narayan?
As a director of the movie, I would like to change some shots of the movie there are……
A I said in a classroom discussion that I will change the character of his wife. Because she is quite silent in the movie.. Because she didn't ask her husband about why he is doing this job, why he is cheating so many people. Instead of resisting, she behaves softly with her husband. She has to be a woman with dignity about the work they are doing. And also about her daughter she also is quite silent. So i might be change both characters.
I might change the mentality of the people of that village. That they will not believe in this kind of superstition.
And i also try to change the sequence and will add the scene which will show the reveal of the character of the astrologer.
